I have read a book which cites something I want to use myself, what do I do?

Secondary Referencing
This kind of referencing is called secondary referencing. The advice is, wherever possible to read the original work. Often this is not feasible so you must make sure that that the reader is aware that you have not read the original and also refer to the work that you did read.


In-text citation: Gibbs' reflective cycle (1988) as cited in Tanguay et al. (2020) shows that...
OR
Gibbs’ reflective cycle is a seminal theory in reflective practice (Gibbs, 1988, as cited in Tanguay et al., 2020).

In the reference list:
Your reference list would only include the item that you had read.
