How do I reference an image in APA (7th ed.) style?

Answer

Citing images (not generated using AI):

Check to see if there is an author associated with the image you want to use. For example, in Canva, click on the three icons next to an image and a window will appear with these details.

In Text:

Figure 1: Doctor checking patient arterial blood pressure

Source (Charliepix, n.d)

In the reference list:

Charliepix. (n.d). Doctor checking patient arterial blood pressure [Photograph]. Canva. https://www.canva.com/photos/MAFX5ZOAoWg-doctor-checking-old-woman-patient-arterial-blood-pressure-healt/

Citing images generated by using an AI tool:

In Text:

Figure 2: Cat sitting on sofa

Note: Image generated using Canva Image Generator
Source (Canva, 2025)

In the reference list:

Canva. (2025). Canva image generator [Large language model]. https://www.canva.com/ai-image-generator/

APA (2020) states that "images and clip art from programs such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint can be used without attribution.” You can find more information on our online APA Library Guide https://libguides.swansea.ac.uk/APA7Referencing/images

NB: If you are using your own images (eg: own photograph) you just need to include a caption. There is no need for an in-text citation or to include in your reference list.
