Can I use EndNote with a word processor other than Word?
Answer
Only Microsoft Word has the full EndNote Cite While You Write feature which formats references as you work. It is being developed for Open Office. However, it is possible to use EndNote with any word processor which can save in rich text format. You will have to format your references when you have finished your document. (Microsoft Works, Word Perfect, OpenOffice and StarOffice will all save in rich text format). To use with rich text format:
- Create a new document in your word processor.
- When you need to insert a citation, open EndNote and select the reference you need. Still in EndNote, click Edit then Copy.
- Go back to your word processor and use Edit then Paste to insert the reference. It will appear in a temporary form with curly brackets, e.g. {Johnson, 1993 #120}.
- When you have finished your document, save it in rich text format then close it.
- In EndNote click Tools - Format paper - Format paper. In earlier versions it may be Tools, RTF document scan, RTF document scan (again).
- Find the file that you created with your word processor and click Open.
- Select the output style you wish to use (for example, author-date) and click Format.
- You will then be prompted for a name for your new formatted document - the existing document with curly brackets will remain as a separate file.
- Click Save. You can then open your new file with your word processor.
