My thesis is in different Word files for different chapters, each with an EndNote bibliography. How can I produce a single bibliography for the end of my thesis?

Answer

One method is to produce a single bibliography by combining all your files into one large file. To do this:

  • Make a back up copy of all your files and work with the backups so that your original files are still safe.
  • Open each document (the copies, not your originals) and unformat the citations. From the EndNote menu in Word select Convert citations and Bibliography then Convert to unformatted citations.

Your references will now appear something like this: {Jones, 2009 #14} and your bibliography will have disappeared. Save your documents when you have done this.

  • Open your first chapter then your second chapter. Select the whole of your second chapter (Ctrl +A) and paste it into the first document after your first chapter. Copy and paste each chapter until you have everything in one document. Save this document.
  • Open your complete document. Go to the EndNote menu in Word and select Update citations and bibliography.

EndNote should now reformat all your citations and create a single bibliography at the end
